TCO calculator: electric vs diesel
Pick the vehicle and the mileage and see in seconds how much you save against an equivalent diesel, how fast the investment pays back and how much CO₂ you avoid.
Expert mode
Every assumption is visible and can be changed: prices, tolls, incentives, residual values, charging infrastructure.
Usage Parameters
Energy Prices
Charging
Vehicle consumption is measured at the vehicle, but you pay for the energy at the meter. AC and DC charging lose roughly 8-15% along the way. This factor converts consumption into billed energy.
Road Toll
Per-kilometre road charge. In Germany, battery-electric trucks are exempt from the Maut until 30 June 2031, while the diesel equivalent above 3.5 t pays it. Rates shown are indicative defaults by weight class and market - confirm against the official tariff tables (BALM for Germany) for your route mix.
Fleet & Ownership Horizon
Policy & Incentives (est.)
EU ETS2 puts a carbon price on road transport fuels. Following the amendment adopted in 2026, it starts on 1 January 2028, not 2027. Cost pass-through = price (€/t) x 2.68 kg CO₂/L / 1000.
Residual Value
Residual value is the most contested assumption in any EV TCO. Diesel and EV are set separately on purpose so you can stress-test it. Residual is calculated on the list price, not on the price after incentive.
Charging Infrastructure
One-off cost of the charging point per vehicle: charger, cabling, switchboard, grid connection and installation. No residual value assumed.
CO₂ accounting scope
Tank-to-Wheel counts only combustion at the vehicle. Well-to-Wheel also counts fuel production and distribution, and grid transmission losses. WTW is the more complete comparison and is the default here.
